DARK EYES
By
John G. Sutton
The sun sets on an antique land
Golden light shimmers and fades
There where the sand meets the sun
Walked the girl with the eyes of shade
It was before Imperial Rome
Then when the Pharaohs ruled
She was the teacher at the temple
Where priests went to be schooled
Cursed were the rules that bound us
Forbidden unsacred love
Sentenced to death for the passion
That was sent by God above
Dust to dust and our lives ended
Yet our souls they did not die
The knife that spilled our star crossed blood
Set us free to meet on high
There in the heavens together
Our spirits swore an oath
That in all lives henceforward
We would be as one with both
Now in this steel town’s center
I saw ‘neath the Northern skies
A girl of pure golden ebony
With the shade in her deep dark eyes
At once my heart beat faster
For that soul and the oath we swore
She was my love from the antique land
We would be forevermore
Far from that ancient sunset
Together again and true
At last our souls reunited
Dark eyes, there is only you.
