A PRAYER AT JOURNEY’S END
By
John G. Sutton
Thank you dear God for this journey
Though it were half struggle and strife
I’ve learnt many things and grew wiser
On me travels along in this life
Now I’ve not been a saint as I wandered
Down roads that were dark and some drear
But allus I’ve tried to be honest
An’ live in your love without fear
Now dayleet for me’s var near faded
An’ signposts, they don’t point to Rome
For a mon wi’ a lifetime behind him
Time’s nearly come fo’t go home
But for I depart into t’ goodneet
I just want tell thee what I think
‘I’ve warked all me days, now I’m knackered
But I’ve still getten ale left fo’t drink
Dear God gi’ us some days fo’ pleasure
Some time just fo’t see grandkids grow
A few years without grind and trouble
With me loved ones, here down below
Then God when thy calls me number
An’ me journey has come to its end
I’ll walk into’t leet as directed
With you by my side as a friend
Then if thy should weigh up me actions
An’ consider this life as a test
God forgive me ‘t sins an’ failures
An’ say I did my gradely best.
