A Challenge for the Modern Spiritualist
March 31, 2000 will be the 152nd birthday of Modern Spiritualism. We face many challenges today, however, we are never alone as we have spirit guides to help us develop on the earth plane.
As I thought about my own process of development and unfoldment I remember having learned that we are all students and teachers and that the life that we live reflects the choices that we make. I remember being taught in the first unfoldment class that I attended why it is important to be selective in choosing one’s spiritual teacher. One’s spiritual teacher is a role model and guide, accompanying and encouraging us on our spiritual pathway. My first, (very earthly) spiritual teacher was Reverend Leo Rogers and he had developed spiritual energy that was apparent on the material level. His energy was significant in attracting those spirits who worked with us in the development of our spiritual seed that was still in an embryonic state. I also learned that through a dedication to spiritual development that my light would eventually be bright enough to emanate its own healing light. I hoped that I would be able to learn to be a healer so that I could live in accordance with the Principles of Spiritualism.
After reflecting a bit about my initial experiences in class I remembered how difficult it was not to listen to my ego, and put it aside to allow spirit messages and infinite healing to use me as a channel.
As Spiritualists develop and unfold we learn that this is a life long process, and that we have spirit guides, who are always with us to help us in our life long journey, if we are willing to accept their help. As we proceed in our development we attract spirits from a higher vibration and our life improves. The Natural Law of Attraction states that, "the creations of like vibrations tend to be attracted to each other. This attraction is considered magnetic in nature." If you think about your family and friends you will notice that usually those with whom you are most comfortable have a similar philosophy of life.
Currently, I am teaching a class called an Introduction to the Philosophy of Spiritualism. In discussing spirit guides the questions arose of, "Who listens to their guides, how much of the time are the messages that we receive understood and acted upon and what is the lesson to be learned from someone who has passed into spirit?" I’d like to tell you a technique that may help you to open up and receive a message from someone who has passed to Spirit. Close your eyes, and allow yourself to clearly see someone’s face. At this moment you are an open channel to the Spirit world so that you are capable of understanding what the lesson is that is being transmitted to you.
If you accept the help offered to you from spirit and act on the highest vibration that is possible you will be helped and your life will be better. You will not feel stuck, tense, angry, resentful, helpless or bitter. You may now, gradually and peacefully open your eyes and come back to the present, feeling refreshed. Now, ask yourself what gifts of knowledge and love were brought to you in this personal message from Spirit. What will you do with this gift? Will you accept the gift, or reject it? Will you remain a victim of your own ego, or will you allow yourself to be born anew, filled with hope and the knowledge that you have taken your fear and allowed yourself to do it anyway!
My lesson and my gift from my spirit guides is similar to that of others. It is to welcome love into my life in every shape and form, to open myself and to keep letting go of any injuries that have been done to me. I am not to project or transfer my fears onto anybody else and to see each person for whom they are individually in the moment. What that means is that I am one side of a coin. If I am standoffish and unwelcoming that is whom I will attract.
Do you want to stay in the old neighborhood, repeating familiar self-defeating behavior or have you finally decided to let yourself be helped by Spirit, and learn from the mistakes from others and the lessons that you have set for yourself?
Spirit guides accompany us on
the road from fear to creativity. You are never alone.
