DAVID LOWE: HEALING ON THE AIR

There is, I believe, a power that exists within
the human voice to exert influence on others beyond the message contained within
the words. The key is inflection,
that is the particular vocal quality contained within the voice that expresses
emotion and feeling. The BBC Radio
presenter David Lowe believes that the inflection within his voice has helped to
calm and even heal a number of his listeners. But there may be much more to
David's voice than the sound, he believes that there is a healing force working
through him. This is his story:
David Lowe is a Spiritualist and his mentor was
the late President of Paignton Spiritualist Church, Lilian Hurst. In 1986 Lilian
introduced David to his personal healing gift by explaining that she saw praying
hands above his head. >From that time onwards Lilian helped David and became
his mentor. She persuaded him that in good time he would find his destined
pathway and to continue with his broadcasting work. Lilian predicted that in the
years ahead David's work with radio would go hand in hand with his spiritual
healing gift. Though at the time he could not see how this could be.
As time passed and David continued to broadcast
across the South West of England on local BBC Radio he found that a growing
number of his listeners were writing in to him using very similar phrases in
their letters. These often included exactly the same words: soothing, calming,
comforting, relaxing, reassuring etc. All words linked to peace and tranquility
of mind. Many listeners wrote in to David mentioning his
"distinctive dark brown voice" attributing a colour tone to the
sound. Often people wrote about
their experience of falling to sleep whilst listening to his voice. It was
whilst reading these letters that David started to realize what Lilian Hurst had
meant all those years before when she had said that his healing gift would be
linked to his work as a broadcaster. His voice, he now recognized, was having a
therapeutic effect on many of his listeners. It was about this time that David
began using a phrase he had heard many times in the Spiritualist Church
"healing thoughts to you". David regularly used that and other words
of gentle encouragement to listeners who had written in to tell him of their
emotional or health issues.
Just before Christmas 1991 David received a
letter signed by two listeners who told him they recorded his weekly programme
"As Time Goes By" and sent this on cassette tape to Geoff, their
invalid relative who lived in Essex. This gentleman suffered terribly with
arthritis and found resting difficult because of the constant pain. The two
listeners requested that David play a Frank Sinatra record for Geoff to cheer
him up. David recalls reading this letter and closing his eyes to try and
visualize the Sinatra song that Geoff would most like to hear. As he did so he
says he heard the words "someone to watch over me" in his mind and he
knew this was the track. From the archive David took the recording and as he
placed it on the turntable the hairs on his neck stood on end as if he were
living one special moment in the destiny of his life.
The request for Geoff was broadcast on 30th
December 1991. A little over one week later David Lowe received a letter from
the man himself it said "Imagine the shock I had when listening to your
wonderful programme. Believe me, tears said it all. How did you know that the
Sinatra song "Someone To Watch Over Me" was my favourite?" Some
weeks later Geoff wrote again: "I had to call in the doctor because I could
not move with this dreadful arthritis. I rested a day or two and spent my time
listening to tape recordings of your radio show that my brother-in-law sends me
each week. Within four days I was walking around. In fact I have been down town
to my club and had a drink. I wasn't too good on the night I heard that request
played for me. It wasn't only the record that made me feel better, it was the
wonderful way you have of putting it over. Your voice somehow gets into one's
system".
David's voice on the radio has brought healing not only to Geoff but also to countless other listeners who regularly write in to his radio shows to say how his words have brought them comfort and peace.
