THE CASE OF THE COTTINGLEY FAIRIES
ELSIE WRIGHT AND A 'GNOME' : FRANCES GRIFFITHS AND THE COTTINGLEY 'FAIRIES'. C. 1917
In the year 1917 at Cottingley in the county of Yorkshire UK two young female cousins borrowed a camera and took a series of photographs that appeared to show fairies. The girls were Elsie Wright, then aged 10 years and Frances Griffiths 14 years and they insisted that the fairies were there in Cottingley glen and the photographs were genuine. These photographs were shown to the world famous author Sir Arthur Conan Doyle who believed them to be real and wrote a book on the subject: 'The Coming Of The Fairies'. 1921. Hodder and Stoughton Ltd. It was not until the year 1982 that the truth finally emerged when the erudite author Joe Cooper interviewed Elsie Wright and she told him that the fairies were faked, cut from a book, then photographed. But Elsie also said that one of the photographs was real and that there really were fairies in Cottingley glen.
In October 2005 John G. Sutton and Mary Sutton of Psychicworld.net along with the author Joe Cooper set out to investigate the case of the Cottingley fairies. Both John and Mary took a series of photographs at Cottingley glen and in one of these there appears to be a fairy sitting on a branch over the waterfall. This photograph is reproduced below.
