Professional mediums are often invited into people's homes to give individual psychic readings. Many mediums are both Clairvoyant and Clairaudient, i.e. they see and hear spirit. Often those consulting a medium will be seeking a contact with a loved one passed into the next world. However not everyone wants to be contacted by what they call a 'ghost'. To put it plainly, some folk are scared stiff by the idea of spirits and spooks and would run a mile if they saw one.
This story is about just such a person, a man whose wife, who had recently died of cancer, was trying to get through to him from the world of spirit. He, being very frightened, would not accept his late wife's approach, but this particular spirit would not stop until she had made contact with her husband. The more he rejected her, the harder she tried. That was when they sent for a medium, or rather the neighbours did.
The man lived in Leigh, Lancashire, in a seemingly ordinary terraced house, not dissimilar from the many hundreds like it in the streets of this industrial town. The lady who had called the medium in was a near neighbour of the recently bereaved gentleman. She reported that her home was haunted and thought it was linked to her neighbours who were also experiencing weird phenomena. During the hours of darkness strange noises, like footsteps walking up the stairs, doors opening and slamming shut, seemingly of their own accord, banging and clattering in empty rooms were waking her and other members of the family. She wondered what was causing this disturbance, but most of all she wanted it stopped.
The really odd thing about the phenomena was the number of locations in which it was being reported. The lady's friend, who lived about four houses further down the street, reported that the 'ghost' too had visited her. Similar noises had been heard at night and a clock had mysteriously moved itself from the living room sideboard to the mantel piece above the fire. Another woman, again from the same street, explained that the week before, whilst she was doing the ironing, a strong wind had blown open her kitchen door and swirled around her, like a miniature tornado. She said the room went freezing cold, this was just before she ran out into her neighbour's house trembling with fear.
It seemed strange that a ghost would want to haunt a street, usually there is a perfectly reasonable explanation for a spirit presence. After all spirit people have, like most of us, better things to do than hang about other people's houses acting daft. Occasionally you will get a poltergeist, that is a low or elemental spirit, which may find some fun in playing tricks on human beings. But these normally gain their energy from a particular individual, in this case the mysterious nonsense was spread along a street, in many different houses. This fact therefore ruled out poltergeist activity, it had to be a spirit person trying to attract people's attention, but why?
As these ladies all lived in the same terraced row of houses, there had to be a common denominator beyond that fact. There was a link to these psychic disturbances and the medium investigating had to find it before he could even attempt to curtail it with the help of spirit guides. When dealing with any haunting the best practice is to gather all the known facts, rather like a psychic Sherlock Holmes. In this case the neighbours all knew each other, they all lived in the same street, and all had experienced very similar weird supernatural phenomena. Further enquiries brought to light that there was a time scale to this. The haunting had begun during the last four to six months. Before that not one of the ladies had reported any strange inexplicable activity in their homes. So what had happened during that period, or immediately prior to it, that may have caused the spirit to approach them?
Getting the group together the medium, Gary Dakin, asked them to think about this and, almost as one, they reached a decision on what or who this spirit might be. In the house next door to where the meeting was taking place there had been a recent death. The mother of that house, who had four children and a loving husband, had passed very quickly with cancer. Perhaps it was she who was now haunting the houses she used to visit as a friend. Gary Dakin decided to try and tune himself in to the spirit world and find out.
As he sat, now alone in the darkened living room of the lady's house, he heard a woman's voice say 'He won't listen...tell him I'm OK...tell him I love him. I love my children. Tell him...he won't listen'. The medium knew it was the voice of the lady who had died. Obviously she had been trying to attract the attention of her husband who was not receptive. Either that or he was too frightened to accept that his late wife could return in spirit form. Gary assured the spirit that he would pass her message to her husband and advised her that she was scaring the pants off her friends with all her ghostly activity. She seemed pleased to have made contact with someone who could hear her at long last and promised to stop. The medium explained that she had a new home now, she could go there and live in the pure light of God's love and, in the fullness of time, she would be reunited with her husband, if she so wished.
When Gary told the people of the house what the spirit had said the lady who had called him in agreed to have a word with the man next door whilst he was there. She was gone for about fifteen minutes, when she returned she looked less than best pleased. It seemed that the man himself had been experiencing the very same kind of psychic phenomena that had so disturbed everyone else. He was very scared and had refused outright to even discuss the haunting with the medium or anyone else. She had, however, given the man the message Gary had promised to pass from his late wife. The medium asked what his reaction had been, 'She's dead, there are no such things as ghosts' he had said.
Weeks later the medium received a telephone call from the lady in Leigh that had contacted him. She said that since his visit there had been no further disturbances and all the neighbours said how calm their homes now felt. The ghost of the poor man's wife had taken the advice of the medium and would be equally at peace in her new home, safe in the love of God. As for her husband, well, he will learn the glorious truth when he himself walks forward into the spirit world where, believe it or not, there really are such things as 'ghosts'.
