Exmoor, in the county of Devon, is a barren lonely place, uninhabited save for the odd farm and a few stray ponies. The minor roads that cross this bleak moor are unlit and, on a moonless cloudy winters night, they can be extremely dark. It was in late November of the year 1993 that Anne Gurini and her partner Larry set out in a motor car for a midnight ride onto the empty moors. It was a journey into the unknown, for there on Exmoor, between the heights of Shilstone Hill and the valley of the river Exe they had an encounter with an inexplicable something from the world beyond.

As Larry drove along the twisting turning road he suddenly saw before him a huge circular column of glowing white mist. Anne Gurini saw it too, she describes it as being of infinite height, towering over the car and seeming to reach right up into the pitch black sky. Larry swerved to avoid the mist and, as the car passed, Anne looked into it and swears it seemed to glow, as though it were possessed of some self illuminating power.

The mist remained visible for all the time they were on that road, though neither Anne nor Larry could explain what exactly it was. Speaking to Anne about this I formed the impression that Larry, her partner, was disinclined to believe the evidence of his own eyes. But Anne was pleased to tell me about it, she had kept the story of their weird experience secret for years, believing that she and Larry would be ridiculed if they spoke out.

There may be an explanation for this mysterious mist, is Exmoor haunted or was this a close encounter with Extra Terrestrials? I guess we will never now.
