How The Dead Speak To Us
By
Judith Chisholm

We do not die. When the body dies, the soul, the consciousness lives on intact, unaltered. Even those who deny this is possible will continue to live after their death and those who believe death is an escape to oblivion will find it is not. How do I know this with utter certainty? I have obtained evidence through researching a little-known paranormal occurrence, the electronic voice phenomenon (EVP). I will explain.

In August 1992 my beloved eldest son Paul 'died' in his sleep. There were no warning signs - at least no more than there had always been with a person who lived in the fast lane and treated his body as if it were made of pre-cast concrete. He simply went to bed and didn't wake up in the morning. The coroner said his death had been due to a severe bronchial attack. The shock was immense. He was indestructible; a physically and mentally powerful young man in the prime of his life" - ’dead'! It was inconceivable. After many months of trauma, months of functioning like an advanced robot which could suffer and weep, I resolved to try to find where Paul had gone.

One day in 1994 I met a woman whose son had also died and she mentioned" a physical circle meeting near my house. A 'physical' circle is one where appraisable paranormal effects are attempted to be obtained. Several people sit round a table in the dark hoping to engage with entities from the spirit world who, at their discretion, can tilt tables, tap out messages emit ectoplasm, levitate objects and suchlike. I joined the circle and six months later, much as I enjoyed the social evenings once a week, was not persuaded there was life after death. In fact I became convinced one of the sitters was creating the 'special effects' although I couldn't imagine why, as you couldn't admit to it, so what was the point?

However, something happened one evening during a sitting which startled me and lit a small flame of hope. I had taken" ’my micro-cassette tape recorder along that evening" ’and placed it on the table. I'm not quite sure why; I think it was simply to try and analyse the direction the taps were coming from in an attempt to glean some information" ’about their origin. There were only four of us that evening: three men and me, the only woman. The sitting was as usual: some table movement, some taps spelling out sentences by means of a code. I listened to the tape a day or so later. I heard the exchanges we the sitters made, a chair creaking, a shuffling, then, out of the blue, I heard my own whispered name - Judith! The voice was female. It wasn't me: I was the only woman there. I didn't say my own name. Who was it? I was intrigued.

After some research I absorbed the astonishing information that what I had recorded was probably a demonstration of the EVP whereby discarnate voices can be captured on magnetic tape and latterly on digital recorders. In other words, the dead are able to speak to us. The phenomenon was discovered over forty years ago by a Latvian documentary film producer named Friedrich Jä»rgenson who was at that time living in Mä¢lnbo in Sweden. He had taken his tape recorder into woods to record birdsong for the sound track of one of his films. Later, when he played the tape he was annoyed to hear a man's voice overlaying the birdsong speaking in Norwegian and discussing the nocturnal habits of the birds. No-one else had been present in the woods when he made his recording so he assumed that" ’somehow his tape recorder had acted like a radio receiver picking up somewhere within its circuits a normal radio transmission.

Jurgenson continued to make recordings and further strange voices were captured. Some of these even addressed him by name and others gave the names of deceased relatives and friends. But the most decisive evidence on tape came when he recorded a female voice which said "Friedel, my little Friedel, can you hear me?. ’Friedel' was Jä»rgenson's pet name, and he immediately recognised the voice of his mother - who had died four years earlier. He was astonished but now convinced he had established a link with the beyond and continued to make recordings".  Somehow I too had tapped into this mysterious link with the spirit world.

Now that I knew the lady who whispered my name on tape was part of a recognised paranormal phenomenon" I began to try in earnest to contact her again and indeed any entity on the other side of life who would care to speak to me, and of course, my son Paul. Vic and I decided to hold sittings at home twice a week with the special purpose of attempting to record spirit voices.

Nothing happened for a long time and all we experienced was the stifling airlessness and heavy blackness of spending an hour twice a week in a small room with everything that could let in light and air covered. The room was so quiet we suffered from sensory deprivation unless we talked all the time so even if any entities had spoken to us on tape we probably wouldn't have heard them in the midst of our babble. After a few weeks we calmed down, let a little light and air into the room and space on tape for the 'voices' to speak to us. One evening in June 1994, after a very hot day, we had our usual session. It was unbearably close in the room and both of us agreed after leaving it that we'd had a strange feeling like an electric current in our bodies. " ’I ran the tape back and began to listen. At 201-2 on the counter, to my amazement, I heard a man's voice say perfectly clearly "I've been every week." I called Vic and we both listened intently." ’I didn't tell him what I thought the voice had said. "I've been every week" Vic said. We looked at each other wide-eyed. "Who is it?" we exclaimed simultaneously. After that momentous evening, someone unseen, from another dimension, spoke to us at almost every sitting.

In November we borrowed some expensive recording equipment as I'd broken my micro cassette recorder. Vic began to tell me about an incident that had occurred earlier in the day when he'd been mixing up an interior cement in the kitchen. He said "I'd just mixed up some 'Polyfilla' and I was thinking about Paul when there was a loud bang from inside the kitchen cupboard." I replied in a facetious way: "Oh, it wasn't Paul making the bang from the kitchen cupboard, the 'Polyfilla' you mixed went hard and you dropped it and that was what made the loud noise". Vic, who wasn't in the mood for flippant remarks, said rather sourly, "Yes, well can you not ...." and then trailed off the retort as one does; left it hanging in mid-air, it's disapproval of my levity clear." ’We carried on chatting and leaving the usual gaps for a further twenty minutes or so, then closed the session. Both of us listened to the playback. It was crystal clear. We reached the point where Vic began his story about the 'Polyfilla'. We heard the preamble and then his sentence "Yes, well can you not ....." But, amazingly, the sentence wasn't hanging in mid air any longer. It was completed and it now said: "Yes, well can you not laugh at us" and the words "laugh at us" were in Paul's voice. It was without a shadow of doubt his voice. Vic went to a boarding school in the country and has a trace of the local accent. Paul went to a London school and adopted the vernacular. Vic speaks fairly slowly, Paul spoke very quickly. Even the sentiment expressed in the finished-off sentence was Paul's. "Don't laugh at "’us" he said, in the plural": ’don't make fun of my brother and me": ’fiercely partisan, protective of his younger brother.

We were both completely overwhelmed. We laughed and cried and ran the tape back over and over again. We'd heard from Paul. He had spoken to us two years after his death. He's not dead. We sat by the expensive recording equipment hugging it as though it was the dearest friend in the world. It had brought us Paul. We loved it. "

During the ensuing years I have recorded hundreds of paranormal voices".  I have written a book about my discoveries "’Voices From Paradise" It explains how everybody can open the channels to try to get communication from the spirit world. In 1996 I started "’The EVP & Transcommunication Society"’ (the only one in the UK and Ireland) in order to disseminate information about the EVP.

I know, however, that scepticism is deeply entrenched. I was sceptical too. However the EVP is a "’repeatable"’ phenomenon. It need not be a second-hand experience and to those who may scoff without attempting to make this miraculous but scientific link with the spirit world themselves, I can only quote Sir William Crookes, physicist, President of the Royal Society and paranormal investigator who in 1874 when challenged by sceptics said: 'I didn't say it was possible, I just said it happened.'

As for me, I have the evidence which has proved to me that life is everlasting. It is just in another form that's all. We will survive death and we will see again those we loved who loved us and who have simply gone on the journey ahead of us.

The spirit voice recording accompanying this feature is just a few words from hours of conversation carried on between October 1999 and May 2000 by myself and a friend and colleague of mine with whom I had a very strong link on earth. He 'died' in 1986.

This recording has the voice of a former Sunday Times colleague of Judith Chisholm speaking to her from beyond this material plane. At first the words spoken may not be clear to you, but listen three of four times and you will be able to discern exactly what is said by 'the dead man'.
