THE FAIRY RABBIT

Back--Home

The town of Leigh, in the county of Lancashire, England is hardly fairyland. But who really knows when and where elemental spirits will appear, or in what form. Looking out towards the old canal from Strange Street, on the boundary of Leigh and Wigan, you can see the coal pit. Bickershaw colliery stands stark against the often gray skies of this industrial landscape. Strange Street was the home of Mr Ken Greenhalgh and his family. He is as down to earth a man as one could wish to meet. But Mr. Greenhalgh has seen the strangest thing on Strange Street. Something that made him wonder if there really could be another dimension, a fairyland where weird creatures exist.

Ken had been out in his van to buy a pizza, from a fast food take-away restaurant, when something very odd happened. As he turned off from the main road leading to his home he saw a huge white rabbit hopping along in front of his vehicle. The time was just after 8 p.m. on a dark February evening. The van's headlights were on and the twin beams lit an impossibly big bunny. In amazement Ken stared, slowing the van down to get a closer look at this oversized creature. He estimated its height as being perhaps three to four feet. It had almost pure white fur and its round tail was bobbing up and down as it hoppity hopped along the road.

Now Ken knew he wasn't imagining this, he had been driving on local deliveries all day and was not over tired. He certainly hadn't been drinking beer or anything else like it. In fact he had just finished a cup of tea before he went to collect the pizza. He looked again. The rabbit had jumped across the street and was now sitting in front of an old folks club house that stood on land directly opposite his home on Strange Street.

Stopping his van Ken jumped out and ran up the pathway to his front door. "Elaine!' he called to his wife as he opened the door, 'Elaine, come and see this'. But Ken's wife was busy bathing the children upstairs. 'It's a giant rabbit!' he shouted and looked again to where the creature sat nibbling at something held between its front paws.

Fearing no one would believe him Ken went to bring his wife, she had to see this. Just seconds later they both stood staring out of their front door, over to where only moments before an enormous fairy rabbit had been sitting. But the big bunny was gone. Hopped off into its own world, back through the invisible door that links this material plane with the kingdom of the fairies.

Strange Street still stands to this day, though the old coal pit has closed and Ken has moved away. As for the fairy rabbit, well who can say if it will return. Perhaps it is still there, hoppity hopping down the road, in another dimension, just a day-dream away.

ASSESSMENT

Q: Do you think that the Fairy Rabbit really does exist in another dimension.

A) Not even for the slightest moment do I believe this fairy rabbit exists anywhere. This Ken character had obviously been reading Alice In Wonderland and imagined it all.

B) I think that there might be another dimension but doubt it is the home of big bunnies.

C) I believe that Ken saw the Fairy Rabbit because he was relaxed and his mind was open to seeing into another dimension. Who knows what might exist there, why not big rabbits and fairy folk.
